Schaal Heating & Cooling "Thinks Outside the Box"

Thinks Outside the Box

As "going green" continues to grow, excite- ment builds about new products boasting of energy savings potential. Unfortunately, the truth is that the largest consumers of energy, the heating and cooling systems in our homes are being ignored. To realize the full efficiency potential of the systems, we must literally "think outside the box."

When you consider a new furnace, you are al- most solely drawn to its AFUE (Annual Fuel Utili- zation Efficiency) rating as it offers the easiest opportunity for comparison-shopping. The higher the AFUE, the lower your utility bills will be, right? Well, maybe.

The reality is that the AFUE rating is achieved under perfectly controlled, laboratory conditions with NO ductwork or accessories attached to the furnace. The AFUE rating, therefore, is giving you're an idea of the potential efficiency of the furnace, not what you automatically achieve when it is installed. Other factors such as equip- ment sizing, ductwork, filters, and other accesso- ries have a major impact on the ability for the fur- nace to deliver its fill potential.

The most common issues we have found when evaluating poor system efficiency is undersized return ductwork. Just like blood pressure in our bodes, if static pressure is too high, we have poor circulation. So, poor air flow contributes to poor system efficiency. Without addressing this at the time a new furnace is installed, the new system, and ultimately the consumer, can suffer from poor system performance for years to come.

The interaction between all of the components is what has been typically ignored by other contractors with the idea that high-efficiency equipment solves all efficiency problems. In order to maximize potential equipment effi- ciency, and deliver truly efficient HVAC sys- tems, Schaal Heating & Cooling has adopted a system-level strategy that encompasses test- ing, verification and installation.

Now -Progress will be made in conquering the largest remaining energy efficiency frontier!
